Revolution is brand new. Things a more-established product takes for granted web resources outside the company, support from a large user base, extensive example code and utilities are all just getting started. Some Macintosh-specific technologies such as drag-and-drop and balloon help are weakly supported or not supported. (Tool tips are available, however). Currently, user interface controls are custom-drawn, rather than drawn using the native OS calls. This eases cross-platform issues, but makes it harder to design an interface for each of the platforms that looks just right. Native controls on the Macintosh are coming in Q3 2001. Revolution is fully cross-platform, which leads to a few rough spots for the platform-specific developer. For example, fonts and font sizes must sometimes be set differently because of the demands of different platforms. (The Profile Manager feature helps address this by allowing the developer to switch the applications user interface between any number of stored profiles.) Mac OS X compatibility and database connectivity are both scheduled for Q3 2001 release. As with REALbasic, initial support for Mac OS X can be expected to have weak spots. |
